Transcultural Hybrid Style

Linda’s art is  a syncretic mix of cultures – Peranakan, Singaporean, Australian and Japanese. These  cultures are part of her lived experience and is  strongly present in her works. Linda’s forebears  were Peranakans who were Chinese from the Southern provinces of China who settled in the Malay Archipelago and developed a hybridized culture that merged local rituals and colonial values whilst retaining fundamental elements of Chinese identity. Food became spicy like Malay cuisine, dress was the Malay sarong kebaya and language was  a mix of Malay,  Southern Chinese dialect and English.  In terms of  crafts, beadwork  reigned supreme.
